Rock n' roll racing Rock & Roll Racing

1. Chem VI (Хим 6)Rock N’ Roll Racing.

2. Drakonis (Драконис)Rock N’ Roll Racing.

4. New Mojave (Нью- Мохаве)Rock N’ Roll Racing.

6. Inferno (Инферно)Rock N’ Roll Racing.

Inferno[edit]

  • Local driver: J. B. Slash (Havac)
  • Races per Division: 14
  • Points to advance: 3200

This is it! The final planet. You can’t even access it in Vs. Mode, so if you’ve been toying around with that, this will be a whole new adventure for you…

This is where the game gets tough. You may well find it somewhat comparable to your struggle on Chem IV way back at the beginning of the game, but it won’t quite be that bad. On some tracks there are reverse warp arrows which send you rocketing backward, probably costing you more victories than anything else. Your opponents will all be sporting Havacs, and they’ll be powerful, so you will no longer have the technological edge. That means relatively minor mistakes become much more serious here, and this why hitting a reverse warp arrow can ruin the race for you. On top of all this, the track layouts can be somewhat confusing.

If you get more than the required points in Division A before the end there’s no reason to continue racing. Go directly to Captain Braddock and watch the ending.

Sequel[]

The front cover of Rock & Roll Racing 2: Red Asphalt

A sequel to the original Rock N’ Roll Racing was made for the 32-bit PlayStation console. The game was sold in Europe as “Rock & Roll Racing 2: Red Asphalt” and in the United States as just “Red Asphalt“.

It featured an Underground comix style in the character’s profiles & ending-videos, a system to upgrading each character’s driving/combat skills similar to RPG games and also contained new Hi-Quality soundtracks of Experimental, Electro-Industrial tendencies.

The game didn’t become as popular as the first, perhaps partly because Interplay was being shut down near the time of its release.

Gameplay

Car selection

The game is a racing game that pits four racers against each other, with up to two racers being player-controlled. Players can choose from a colourful collection of comic-book-inspired humans and aliens. The other racers are “Rip” and “Shred,” who appear in all races, plus a third character unique to each planet in single-player games. Each race consists of four laps around tracks viewed from an isometric perspective, which helps players discern the presence of frequent sloping sections spread throughout the game’s various tracks. In addition to navigating the turns, racers must also maneuver hills and dips without falling or jumping over the guard rail at the track’s edge.

While it is a racing game, the game places a heavy emphasis on attacking the vehicles of competitors. Cars reappear with full health a few seconds after blowing up, with the only penalty being the lost time and falling behind in the race. Players are rewarded with a monetary “attack bonus” each time they provide the finishing blow against another car using their forward or rear weapons (and a similar “lapping bonus” when they gain a full one-lap lead on an opponent during the race). Tracks are littered with mines and health power-ups, as well as money power-ups. Other hazards include oil slicks, snow drifts, and lava, depending on the planet hosting the race.

Between races, players can spend the money they have earned on more advanced equipment for their vehicle (engines, tires, shocks, and shielding) or on increasing their capacity for the frontal weapon (energy blasts or missiles), rear weapon (slip sauce or mines), and turbo boost (jump jets or nitro boosts), each of which can max out at seven. Despite their limited capacity, every vehicle has its weapon and boost charges replenished at the completion of each lap in a race. Racers can also buy more advanced vehicle models; however, all equipment and weapons upgrades are lost when a new vehicle is purchased.

The first three drivers to complete a race are awarded both money and points according to the final standings. Points are required for advancement to the next racing division or the next planet, with two divisions on each planet. A player who has not obtained enough points during a division’s racing season must repeat the division, again starting with zero points, but all changes to the player’s money and car remain in effect. In two-player mode, when only one player has sufficient points, the character in charge of advancement asks “Leave your loser friend behind?”, allowing the leading player to continue alone by removing the other player from the game. The dropped player can continue from that point later by using the most recent password, once the game is reset.

Summary of Strengths and Weaknesses of Rock n’ Roll Racing

Rally rock and roll possesses several strengths that contribute to its appeal:

  • Unique blend of racing and combat elements, providing a thrilling and dynamic gameplay experience.
  • Memorable soundtrack featuring rock classics that enhance the game’s atmosphere.
  • Varied character selection with distinct abilities, allowing for different playstyles and strategies.
  • Upgrade system that adds depth and customization to your racing experience.
  • Replayability with multiple tracks, challenges, and game modes to keep you engaged.

However, there are also a few weaknesses worth mentioning:

  • Visual and audio limitations due to the game’s original release on the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive).
  • Limited multiplayer options compared to modern racing games.
  • Sometimes challenging difficulty curve, requiring practice and skill to overcome.

Despite these weaknesses, Rock n’ Roll Racing remains a beloved classic that offers thrilling racing action and a unique blend of genres. Strap in, rev your engines, and rock the tracks in this unforgettable racing experience!

Characters and Abilities

Rock n’ Roll Racing features a roster of memorable characters, each with their own distinct abilities and playstyles:

  • Snake Sanders: Known for his aggression and speed, Snake excels at ramming opponents and taking the lead.
  • Tarquinn: A skilled technician with excellent handling and the ability to repair his vehicle during races.
  • Jake Badlands: Possessing a powerful jump ability, Jake can leap over obstacles and gain an advantage on the track.
  • Cyberhawk: Equipped with advanced weaponry, Cyberhawk can devastate opponents with missiles and lasers.

Choose your favorite racer and utilize their unique abilities to outmaneuver rivals and cross the finish line first.

Points and money[edit]

Each time you reach a new planet you start racing in Division B. To reach the harder Division A you’ll need to earn points by placing in one of the top three positions.

  • First place: 400 points and $10,000
  • Second place: 200 points and $7,000
  • Third place: 100 points and $4,000

Once you have enough points in Division A you can leave the current planet and move onto the next one.

You can also earn money during races by blowing up competitors ($1000) or by driving over the money on the track ($1000 each). If you do really well you can earn a $5000 bonus by lapping the driver who is in last place and then finishing in first place.

Bonuses and Items

Rock n’ Roll Racing offers various bonuses and items that can turn the tide of a race:

  • Power-Ups: Collect power-ups scattered throughout the tracks to gain temporary advantages such as speed boosts, oil slicks, or homing missiles.
  • Currency: Earn money by winning races and use it to upgrade your vehicle’s armor, weapons, and engine for improved performance.
  • Track Hazards: Watch out for hazards like oil slicks, landmines, and jumps that require careful navigation to avoid losing valuable positions.

Strategically utilizing these bonuses and items can give you the edge needed to secure victory.

Passwords

Passwords are given out at the beginning of each new “racing season” (each planet has its own definition of how many races make up a season, but early advancement will automatically start a new season), and they are located at the bottom of the F/X screen (accessible from the menu between races). These passwords are a complex code, consisting of three 4-digit sections, and they dictate everything about the players’ progress: the character used, the vehicle type and color, weapons and parts upgrades, racing planet and division, difficulty setting, and money. The Game Boy Advance version of the game uses an EEPROM chip to save the player’s progress in lieu of the password system.

The password codes only allow the player to save a maximum of $999,990 (six digits); if there are more than six figures in the bank account, the password truncates the leftmost digits over six (e.g. if there’s $1,002,000 when the player quits, there will be only $2,000 when using the password to continue later). Due to the two-player password function, it’s possible to “cheat” by entering the same password for both players or by entering passwords for players who were at entirely different points in the game. The password with the lowest difficulty setting and on the earliest planet and racing division will be used as the basis for play from then on, which allows for a Warrior-skill character with a maxed-out vehicle to race against Rookie-class AIs in the Rookie skill mode.

Though a password generator QBASIC program exists, the passwords it creates often result in a glitch, causing the player to race on glitchy planets—that exist only as a bug and can crash the game—after racing on Inferno. In the Rookie skill mode, however, they work perfectly, as long as one doesn’t try to take the character beyond the third planet using the password.

Sequel

The front cover of Rock & Roll Racing 2: Red Asphalt

A sequel to the original Rock N’ Roll Racing was made for the 32-bit PlayStation console by Interplay. The game was sold in Europe as Rock & Roll Racing 2: Red Asphalt and in the United States as just Red Asphalt.

It featured an Underground comix style in the character’s profiles & ending-videos, a system to upgrading each character’s driving/combat skills similar to RPG games and also contained new Hi-Quality soundtracks of Experimental, Electro-Industrial tendencies.

The game didn’t become as popular as the first, most likely due to Interplay’s closure near the time of the game’s release. Also, it retained little of the gameplay that had made the first game so unique and popular.

Nho[edit]

  • Local driver: Butcher Icebone (Havac)
  • Races per division: 14
  • Points to advance: 3200

The Havac is to Nho as the Battle Trak is to Bogmire, but it’s not as important to upgrade now, since your Battle Trak is probably pumped up and it still races well on the ice. It’s still not a bad idea to upgrade even with little money for upgrades, though, since the Havac won’t need a super engine to get through the snow, and it’ll go even faster with a super engine. 🙂 If you’re playing Snake, don’t upgrade your engine too much right off. You’re used to the Battle Trak now; the Havac will go too fast and you will run into corners… your lack of cornering skill becomes more problematic at high speeds. You can beat the opposition easily enough, so don’t rush to upgrade the engine too soon.

Characters[]

Heroes

The heroes of Rock N’ Roll Racing are the player-selectable characters, who each originate from a different planet.

  • Snake Sanders (Terra)
  • Tarquinn (Aurora)
  • Jake Badlands (Xeno Prime)
  • Katarina Lyons (Panteros V)
  • Ivanzypher (Fleagull)
  • Cyberhawk (Serpentis)
  • Olaf from The Lost Vikings (Valhalla)
  • from The Lost Vikings (billboards, Bogmire)

There are six characters that are readily selectable, each of which has a +1 enhancement for two of the four skills that are related to how well their vehicle handles: acceleration, top speed, cornering, and jumping. Olaf, from The Lost Vikings, another Silicon & Synapse game that was in development at the same time, is a hidden character, requiring a code to access him, and instead of two skills, Olaf has three. At the character selection screen (with Talquin showing on the screen), while holding down L, R, and Select, press left then right on the d-pad, and Olaf will appear. There is an eighth character, also hidden, who has no picture or name but has the +1 bonus for all four of the available skills. This character is sometimes called the “Phantom”, and he/she/it is only accessible using specially-crafted passwords.

Many of the characters, location names, etc. take their name or likeness from hard rock music. Snake Sanders is based on Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale, Jake Badlands is named for Jake E. Lee, guitarist for a band called Badlands, and Cyberhawk is most likely a reference to the cover art for the Judas Priest album Screaming for Vengeance.

Villains

The villains are the AI-controlled opponents. Each planet has its own dominant local racer.

  • Viper Mackay (Chem VI)
  • Grinder X19 (Drakonis)
  • Ragewortt (Bogmire)
  • Roadkill Kelly (New Mojave)
  • Butcher Icebone (Nho)
  • J.B. Slash (Inferno)
  • Rip
  • Shred

Rip and Shred appear on every planet in 1-player mode. Rip is also in every race in 2-player mode, while the second player displaces Shred as the fourth racer.

A race on the SNES version.

While it is a racing game, there is heavy emphasis on attacking competitor’s vehicles; since the cars always reappear with full health just a few seconds after blowing up, the only “harm” done is falling behind in the race. Players are rewarded with a monetary “attack bonus” each time they provide the finishing blow against another car using their projectile weapons (and a similar “lapping bonus” when they gain a full one-lap lead on an opponent during the race). In accordance with the continual destruction and restoration of the racing vehicles, the tracks are littered with mines and health power-ups, as well as money power-ups. Other hazards include oil slicks, snow drifts, and lava, depending on the planet hosting the race.

Players are updated on the race by commentator “Loudmouth Larry” (Larry “Supermouth” Huffman), who makes comments like “The stage is set, the green flag drops!” (or “Let the carnage begin!“), and “Rip: is about to blow!” in an enthusiastic tone at appropriate moments during the race. (There is a slight pause between a character’s name and any given phrase, as each name and each phrase is its own sound effect, which can be heard in the F/X screen.)

Between races, players can spend the money they’ve earned on more advanced equipment for their vehicle (engines, tires, shocks, and shielding) or on increasing their capacity for the frontal weapon (energy blasts or missiles), rear weapon (slip sauce or mines), and turbo boost (jump jets or nitro boosts), each of which can max out at seven. Despite their limited capacity, every vehicle will have its weapon and boost charges replenished at the completion of each lap in a race. Racers can also buy more advanced car models, and any upgrades already acquired are disregarded when purchasing a new vehicle.

The dropped player can continue from that point later by using their most recent password, once the game is reset.

History

Development

Rock n’ Roll Racing was developed as a sequel to the Super NES game RPM Racing, though Blizzard changed the idea from being a direct sequel and reworked it to have a “rock n’ roll” theme.

Legacy

A sequel, Rock & Roll Racing 2: Red Asphalt, was released for the Sony PlayStation.

In February 2021, Rock n’ Roll Racing was re-released as part of Blizzard Arcade Collection for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PCs alongside several versions of The Lost Vikings and Blackthorne. The compilation includes the Mega Drive version, the Super NES version, and a “Definitive Edition” with widescreen support, 4-player split screen, and other features.
